BASIC PURPOSE

Positions in this family are responsible for assisting with gathering and tracking geographical information and for developing and maintaining the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases and data sets.  This includes reading and interpreting source documents and entering required data into the GIS.  These individuals will also produce maps and provide technical assistance to staff and customers.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS

Level III:
This is the specialist level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities at the advanced level and perform tasks with greater independence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Level III:

An associate’s degree in geographic information systems (GIS), geography, geology, cartography, natural resources, environmental science, engineering, computer science, or a closely related field plus two year of technical experience in GIS systems work;

or equivalent course work at a technical or vocational school, in geographic information systems (GIS), geography, geology, cartography, natural resources, environmental science, engineering, computer science, or a related field plus two year of technical experience in GIS systems work;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of technical experience in GIS systems work for each year of the required education plus two additional years of technical experience in GIS systems work.
