Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving counseling and other services for individuals receiving treatment for problems related to alcohol/drug abuse.
The Alcohol and Drug Counselor job family consists of four levels which are distinguished by the complexity of the duties assigned, the depth and breadth of accountability, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.
This is the career level position incumbents perform all essential functions at the full performance level and may provide training or assistance to others in completing various requirements related to drug/alcohol counseling and other services.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of the completion of two courses in psychology, social work, chemical dependency or substance abuse at the college level and three years of experience in counseling alcohol/drug abuse patients or clients in a recognized alcohol/drug treatment, rehabilitation or counseling program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of two additional college level courses in psychology, social work, chemical dependency or substance abuse for a maximum of one year of qualifying experience.
