Main Purpose of Job

The Contractual Community Health Outreach Worker I which is the peer recovery advocate within the Division of Addiction Services will assist patients in identifying and connecting with appropriate recovery supports, developing motivation for recovery and establishing and maintaining recovery lifestyles. The incumbent will work with patients in various substance abuse treatment settings including Level 1 Outpatient, Level II Intensive Outpatient, Halfway Houses, Recovery Houses, Residential Services, Medication Assisted Treatment Services, Jail-Based Programs, etc. to access services determined by assessment, problem identification, and individualized treatment planning to be of value to the patient as part of a holistic approach to the treatment of substance use disorders.  Additionally, advocates will provide outreach to other high-risk populations that may include drug court participants, hospital patients, homeless, family members of persons with addiction, etc. The advocate will focus on individuals with a history of unsuccessful attempts to establish recovery oriented lifestyles and who are in need of multiple ancillary services available within the community. The successful applicant must have familiarity with treatment and community resources that support recovery from addictive disease and co-occurring behavioral health disorders. Must have the ability to maintain effective peer recovery relationships with patients and other members of the care team. The successful applicant may not be currently involved in the criminal justice system.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:  None. 

NOTE:

1.  Experience providing assistance to individuals in a health care or social services setting may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Health Services classifications or Health Services and specialty codes in the health related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant should have familiarity with treatment and community resources that support recovery from addictive disease and/or co-occurring behavioral health disorders. Experience in a behavioral health setting is preferred.  Candidates with firsthand experience as a recipient of services in Maryland's behavioral health system are encouraged to apply.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
