Introduction

The Maryland Department of Agriculture has an immediate opening for a Field Veterinarian for the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland.  This position will be based in Annapolis, Maryland, and will serve as lead for field, regulatory, and emergency readiness and response duties.

This is a permanent, full-time position with benefits.  May involve occasional evenings and weekends, and also on call status.

Working conditions may involve:  working outdoors in inclement conditions; working in post mortem laboratory activities with unpleasant sensory stimuli; physical hazards of large animals and their environments; using equipment required to produce rapid animal death such as drugs, chemicals, mechanical equipment and firearms; using heavy equipment such as gates, chutes and decontamination gear; passing a Pulmonary Function Test, wearing a respirator;  restraining large animals; loading supplies.

The wearing of Personal Protective Equipment may be required when working with diseased animals, tissues or laboratory specimens to protect against infectious agents and hazardous substances.  Position is likely to require service as a field incident commander in situations involving hazardous chemicals and/or infectious agents and require respirator use.

Main Purpose of Job

This is a lead position for field, regulatory, and emergency readiness and response duties, and will be Field Veterinarian for the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland. The incumbent serves primarily to prevent introduction of infectious diseases among Maryland's agricultural livestock and poultry by enforcing animal health regulations, providing diagnostic and investigative services and by educating animal producers, exhibitors, and veterinarians on disease control.

POSITION DUTIES

Field Veterinarian - Responsible for conduct of all Animal Health regulatory, emergency, and other service operations for the Delmarva region of Maryland and Southern Maryland.  Supervises/leads  laboratory and field staff, manages budgets and other assigned resources.  Conducts animal health operations in the region across the spectrum from routine to emergency.  Represents the Agency to local, other Maryland and out of state agencies in matters pertaining to livestock and poultry health.  Manages cooperative agreements or other statewide programs pertaining to animal health.

Relief Laboratory Director - Responsible as primary backup to the Salisbury Laboratory Director.  This includes the delivery of full service poultry diagnostics in the primary poultry laboratory in the agency system and tri-state regional delivery of partial service livestock and other animal health diagnostic services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or its equivalent.

Experience: Three years of general veterinary medicine experience, at least one year of which must have included field experience involving inspection, diagnosis or treatment of a variety of animal types.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in veterinary preventive medicine classification or veterinary preventive medicine specialty codes in the veterinary medical science field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required and experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates who are licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one State, and/or who possess Livestock or Avian veterinary medical experience will be given preference.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
