Main Purpose of Job

Assist with grant-funded, project-based archaeological research, including creating and updating searchable databases of archaeological information from the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab's collections. Assist project managers with overall design of databases, coordination of shared databases and the creation of a user-friendly web-based interface for databases when appropriate. Work with JPPM permanent and seasonal staff in excavating sites in advance of construction-related activities at JPPM and during the JPPM Public Archaeology Program. This entails all aspects of archaeological excavation and recordation, processing artifacts in the Lab and report writing. Also, provide professional guidance to volunteers working on the project. Manage the project when full-time, permanent staff not on the site. Assist with other archaeological field and lab projects as required, such as processing artifact collections already at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. This position is required to work on-site 5 days a week, 40 hours per week. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, public speaking and writing skills; strong interest in working collaboratively; and proficiency in computer-based word processing, spreadsheets and databases. This is a one year, grant-funded contractual position with the possibility of future contract renewal.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsible for creating a searchable database of archaeological contexts in the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab, as well as performing multiple duties related to ongoing archaeological excavations and curation projects at JPPM.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Bachelor's degree in anthropology, history or related field.  

Experience:   Two years of archaeological field or lab experience working with archaeological materials in Maryland.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with a Master's degree in anthropology, history or a related field and/or experience with database creation and management. Understanding of archaeological processes and methodology, ability to understand technical archaeological reports, knowledge of material culture associated with Maryland archaeological sites, proficiency with database development, archaeological fieldwork experience in Maryland.
