Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

The primary responsibility of this position is to assess, facilitate, and support students' language development and provide training to staff regarding techniques and strategies to utilize in academic and social settings at the Maryland School for the Deaf. The position requires collaborative work with classroom teachers and related service providers including classroom teachers, ASL specialists, reading specialists, and speech language pathologists. The incumbent will work with students that have a significant delay in their language development, special needs and/or additional learning challenges.

POSITION DUTIES

Conduct a variety of language assessment tools including Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP).  If the applicant does not have any experience or training in this area, the applicant will be asked to receive training to administer the assessment tools.

Provide consultation, coaching, and training to teachers in the area of language development for all students regardless of developmental levels.

Provide support to teachers in using Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices/programs and strategies in the classrooms (e.g., PECS).  If the applicant does not have any experience or training in this area, the applicant will be asked to receive training in the area.

Utilize ASL standards as a part of language development for all students.

Update and analyze individual and school wide assessment data in the area of language development.

Provide both one-on-one and group services to students with significant language delays.

Collaborate with teachers and related service providers to write present levels of performance and develop IEP goals and objectives in the area of language development and communication for students age 3 to 8th grade; the applicant may attend IEP meetings to gather and provide input in the area of language development and communication.

Assist in the development of an ASL immersion program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Masters Degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, Early Childhood, or Applied Behavior Analysis

Experience working with children with special needs and significant language delays.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in writing IEP goals, experience or training with the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP), and/or experience using or working with students who use augmentative communication devices/strategies in the classrooms.

Training and experience working with students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Certificate/Licensure in Teacher Education or Specialty Areas such as language development, applied behavior analysis, and other related fields.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
