LOCATION OF POSITION

This position is located at 310 W. Saratoga St, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for performing the installation, connection, maintenance, modernization, repair and removal of simple and complicated electrical equipment.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Assemble, install, test maintain and repair electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus and fixtures using hand and power tools
  • Trace, diagnose, repair malfunctioning systems, apparatus and components using test equipment and hand tools.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, installations and components to identify hazards, defects and the need for adjustment or repair.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers o other components; Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.
  • Design electrical circuit schematic plans and write specifications; Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.
  • Prepare sketches and follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment.
  • Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment.
  • Work from scaffolds, ladders and roofs to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.
  • Prepare estimates for new installation of lighting fixtures, receptacles, control circuits, relays, new conduits and wiring. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience installing, repairing, testing and maintaining electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and control devices at commercial or residential buildings or other facilities.

Notes:

1. Additional experience as described above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited vocational or technical high school or other vocational or technical school with a concentration in electricity may be substituted for three years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience as a non-commissioned officer in construction electrician classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the installation and repair of electrical systems, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to applicants willing to work in Baltimore City.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24-hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification who are designated as Level I or Level II employees shall attend and successfully complete the appropriate asbestos safety and health training as required by Executive Order 01.01.1987.22.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED.  The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended.  The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.  

Eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.

You MUST possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job – Verification will be completed by the appointing authority.  If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process.  Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of an examination.  Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week.  You must include on your application the time spent on such activity.  You must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act to be hired in the position for which you apply.  

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
