Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for providing assistance to the professional staff by performing instruction-related duties and by giving individual attention and assistance to groups of students.

POSITION DUTIES

Assist students individually or in groups to reinforce the learning situation established by the teacher; helping with skills development, obtain, distribute, collect and inventory instructional materials; assist in the preparation of instructional materials; maintain bulletin boards; display areas and interest centers; perform a variety of clerical task including taking attendance and collecting assignments. Coverage of classes on a limited basis may occasionally be necessary. Performs and completes other related duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience assisting a teacher in a classroom setting.  

Note:  Applicants may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university for the required experience at the rate of 30 credit hours for each year of experience assisting a teacher.

Experience assisting students individually or in groups to reinforce the learning situation established by the teacher, helping with skills development and extensive experience assisting in the preparation of instructional materials.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act and travel throughout the State are required.  Any misrepresentation of academic or experience requirements for this position may result in non-selection or termination of employment. Must be willing to work on Saturdays on a rotating basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Title I of the Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act requires that paraprofessionals working as instructional assistants meet one of the following criteria prior to an offer of employment:

1. Completion of two years of study at an institution of higher education.

2. Possession of an associate’s degree.

3. Demonstrate through a formal state or local assessment process, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics. Applicants not possessing the necessary post-secondary education may obtain additional information about the assessment process from the employing agency.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
