Manages an assigned geographical region of the State to enforce regulations to promote compliance with State and Federal Occupational Safety and Health laws, regulations, and standards to improve workplace safety and health for all Marylanders.

-Identifies unsafe working conditions to eliminate hazards by ensuring that inspections and compliance assistance is conducted in accordance with the Field Operations Manual (FOM) and current MOSH policies. 

 

-Directs and trains other OSHCOs in the recognition and documentation of hazards, the application of laws, regulations and standards to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses using on-the-job training in accordance with the FOM.

 

-Manages regional operations by conducting informal conferences and case file reviews to support Agency goals in accordance with MOSH policies and procedures.

 

-Provides technical support to the public to enhance understanding of workplace hazards in accordance with the FOM.

 

-Performs other duties as assigned by management, including but not limited to, duty officer, performing or attending in-house and/or outside training activities.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, physical science or life science which includes twelve credit semester credit hours in chemistry and eighteen additional semester credit hours in any combination of the following: chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology or industrial hygiene.  

Experience: Four years of experience inspecting, researching and analyzing chemical and physical workplace hazards affecting employee health in order to control or eliminate hazards and to ensure compliance with federal and State occupational safety and health laws, regulations and standards.

Notes:

1. Additional experience inspecting, researching and analyzing chemical and physical workplace hazards affecting employee health may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.  

2. A master’s degree in industrial hygiene may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in General Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement and Compliance classifications or General Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement and Compliance specialty codes in the Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement, and Compliance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
