Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Senior Communications Manager within its Division of Marketing and Communications.

Main Purpose of Job

This is an experienced writer and communicator reporting to the Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs. The primary function of this position is to  help to shape key messages for senior leadership and the Governor's and Lt. Governor's offices, including speeches/talking points, PowerPoint presentations, legislative testimony and video scripts.

POSITION DUTIES

Other key responsibilities include developing and editing press releases and letters/OpEds; coordinating review with stakeholders and responding to media requests; contributing to the MDBiz News blog, the PULSE newsletter and the department’s social media channels.

The selected candidate must have experience in using a full suite of writing and editing tools for writing communications for general audiences and special interest stakeholders, images and video; strong public and media relations experience; understanding of social media; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships; excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to manage multiple deadlines; work independently, and handle multiple, concurrent and high priority projects. Candidate must be well organized with a proven track record of working well under pressure. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a major in English, Journalism, Communications, or Business,

Experience: Four years’ experience in public information, public relations, journalism or other related professional experience.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, Google Mail and/or other relevant software.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
