Introduction

The Maryland Technology Assistance Program (MDTAP) is a program of the Maryland Department of Disabilities. Our mission is to enhance the lives of all Marylanders with disabilities, older Marylanders, and their families by helping support access to assistive technology (AT) devices and services.​​ Assistive technology enables individuals with disabilities to live, work and learn more independently.

Main Purpose of Job

The AT specialist coordinates device demonstration, device loan and technology reuse activities providing services to individuals with all disabilities of all ages. The position collaborates with state and local government agencies, non-profits and advocates to organize and deliver training on AT related topics and provides direct information and referral assistance on AT related topics to individuals with disabilities.

POSITION DUTIES

Essential Duties of the Position (not all-inclusive)

DEVICE DEMONSTRATION AND LOAN

•          Organize and maintain the AT display in the AT Demonstration Library;

•          Maintain inventory of items available for demonstration and loan;

•          Plan purchases of AT products based on regular inventory assessment;

•          Ensure proper maintenance of all AT demonstration and loan items;

•          Schedule and host individual and group tours, consultations and AT assessments;

•          Demonstrate AT to individuals and groups at MDTAP and throughout the state;

•          Develop and implement policies and procedures for the Device Loan Program;

•          Administer Device Loan Program operations, including shipping/transport of products , tracking      inventory  on loan, troubleshooting and technical assistance; and

•          Develop and maintain relationships across a variety of organizations to promote assistive technology for use by people with disabilities.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING

•          Prepare and deliver, either in-person or via other meeting tools, training sessions on a variety of topics   relates to AT; and

 •          Provide article content for use in MDTAP’s blog, newsletter and social media for the purpose of raising awareness of AT software, devices and concepts.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants who are not using the education substitution, must have three years of experience in a variety of assistive technologies and/or accessible electronic and information technologies, with expertise in training, demonstrating assistive technology, and providing information and referral.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a technology or disability-related discipline, such as special education, psychology, computer science, or allied health (occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology). 

RESNA Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) or comparable certification 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
