Main Purpose of Job

The Police Communications Operator I is the entry level of communications work in law enforcement. The main purpose of the job is to facilitate officer safety by monitoring police radio transmissions and utilizing all communications to that end.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: None

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of dispatching experience in a 911 (police / emergency) services environment utilizing a CAD (computer aided dispatch) system.

One year of experience in a multi-faceted work environment using data entry keyboard functions and a multi-line telephone system.

A combination of one year of emergency dispatch training, education  and/or experience

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates will be subject to an initial drug and extensive background investigation including a polygraph examnation prior to appointment.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide a telephone number at which they can be reached.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process for this recruitment will involve a review of each application.  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list, for at least one year, in the BEST, BETTER or QUALIFIED category.  The list will be used by the hiring manager to select the individual to fill the vacancy.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
