Main Purpose of Job

This position is to serve as a liaison between the general public and the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (Board) and the Veterinarian Technical Committee (VTC). Provides highly skilled administrative support for the Board and Executive Director and requires knowledge of Board regulations, skill, and the ability to deal professionally with the general public, licensed veterinarians, and registered veterinary technicians (RVTs). This position supervises the office secretary, and also is primarily responsible for planning and carrying out records retention project.

POSITION DUTIES

Evaluates veterinary technician applications to determine whether they are eligible to sit for national exam, and submit to Executive Director.

Process complaints from the public.

Process annual license renewals for veterinary hospital.

Arranges and attends monthly Board meetings. Takes, transcribes, and prepares official minutes of meetings.

Answers the telephone, greet visitors, coping, opening and distributing mail.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: One (I) year experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

1. At least 6 months of experience handling formal complaints.

2. At least 6 months of experience writing letters, preparing detailed correspondence and writing reports.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
