LOCATION OF POSITION

This position is within the Facilities Planning, Design, Construction and Energy Division located at 201 Baptist St. Salisbury, MD 21801

Main Purpose of Job

Main purpose of this position is to perform inspections, record keeping, contract administration and construction management functions for construction contracts awarded by the Department of General Services.

POSITION DUTIES

Building Construction Inspector III is the advanced level of proficiency in building construction inspection in Maryland State Service involving supervisory and highly skilled technical work in the engineering field at the sub-professional level.

Duties include but are not limited to:

- An employee inspects major construction projects of public buildings at State institutions for compliance with plans and specifications.

- Plans and supervises the work of subordinates who inspect specific parts of a project.

-Trains and instructs subordinates in the techniques of making field inspections.

- Reviews plans for construction projects prepared by subordinate personnel.

- Interprets specifications and approves minor changes that become necessary due to normal construction progress. 

- Prepares and submits regular progress reports and costs estimates to keep supervisory personnel informed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Four years of building construction experience, three years of which must have been at the level of supervisor or building codes inspector on building construction projects.

Note:  1. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Civil Engineer Corps classifications or Technical Engineer or Civil Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to applicants willing to accept contractual employment and limited to applicants willing to accept employment in Wicomico County, MD.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

The nature of this position may require that the employee be able to drive an automobile. Therefore, a valid Class D Maryland driver's license may be required before appointment to the position.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination may consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED.  The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended. The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.

Eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.

You MUST possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job – Verification will be completed by the appointing authority.  If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process.  Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of an examination.  Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week.  You must include on your application the time spent on such activity.  You must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act to be hired in the position for which you apply.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled.

The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
