Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Monitoring and Non-Tidal Assessment Division, is currently accepting applications for Natural Resources Biologist II positions. These positions are located in our Annapolis, MD office. The selected candidates will participate in the planning and implementation of freshwater stream ecological assessments and will serve as a member of a field crew responsible for the collection of data on fishes, benthic macroinvertebrates, herpetofauna, crayfishes, freshwater mussels, physical habitat, water quality, and land use in non-tidal streams and rivers as part of the Maryland Biological Stream Survey. General duties for all three positions will include field data collections, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting related to the status and distribution of Maryland's aquatic resources. Duties specific to each of the three positions are as follows:

1. Assist with managing activities related to the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund- a project aimed at Chesapeake Bay restoration; collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data from a variety of sources; coordinate with other federal, state, and municipal stakeholders; provide input to managers for decisions on stream rehabilitation and nutrient and sediment reduction.

2. Organize, plan, and implement surveys of rare species in Maryland's stronghold watersheds; collect and process quantitative benthic macroinvertebrate samples from stream restoration monitoring sites; identify benthic macroinvertebrates to lowest taxonomic level.

3. Assist with collection and analysis of stream flow data to support rating curve and load calculations as part of the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund; plan and implement surveys for rare and invasive aquatic species; analyze landscape data using GIS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

Notes:

1. Additional professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credits for one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.   

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of professional work experience must have been in the research and monitoring of aquatic ecosystems.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

Electrofishing techniques (boat, backpack, and barge mounted designs), D-nets or other benthic macroinvertebrate sampling techniques,  as well as the assessment of physical habitat quality, geomorphology and water quality.

Taxonomy and ecology of stream fishes, benthic macroinvertebrates, herpetofauna, crayfishes, and freshwater mussels.

Assessment and evaluation of environmental best management practices used in stream and watershed restoration.

Analysis of living resource, habitat, and water quality data to produce technical and public-friendly reports.

The use of software including Access, Excel, and ESRI (or other GIS software).

Experimental design and statistical analysis using SAS, R, PCOrd, or other statistical software. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

All information concerning your qualifications must be submitted by the closing date. We will not consider information submitted after this date. Applicants certified to list will receive eligibility for a period of one (1) year. Eligibility may be extended beyond one (1) year period.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
