Main Purpose of Job

This is highly responsible management level, professional, supervisory and administrative work with the overall responsibility for managing a staff of professional fire protection engineers and serving as the primary technical assistant to the State Fire Marshal to ensure compliance with the State Fire Code as applicable to design, construction, and use of new and existing buildings and hazardous processes from a life safety and property protection standpoint.

POSITION DUTIES

Manages and leads the engineering bureau, having overall responsibility for supervision, program planning and implementation, coordination and directing the work of the professional fire protection engineering staff consistent with the policies and procedures established by the State Fire Marshal.

Confers with and provides professional fire protection engineering advice, guidance and research as the primary technical advisor to the State Fire Marshal regarding matters related to code enforcement, interpretation, development and other fire safety related issues, policies, procedures and programs.

Represents the Office of the State Fire Marshal on various State, national and local code development and advisory committees.

Plans, directs, coordinates and reviews the work of the fire protection engineers to ensure appropriate application, consistency and approval of proper fire protection engineering practices and procedures to attain compliance with the State Fire Code as applicable to design, construction, use and occupancy of new and existing buildings and hazardous processes from a life safety and property protection standpoint.

Researches, analyzes, interprets, develops and applies code criteria and standards for enforcement of the State Fire Code and associated codes and standards relative to current and new developments in building construction materials; methods of construction; fire resistance of materials; fire detection,  alarm and suppression systems; potential fire hazards and egress design.

Provides fire protection engineering consulting services to other State and local government agencies.

Provides professional and expert testimony for public hearings, legal depositions and court cases regarding all types of fire code and fire protection matters. 

Develops and assists with regulatory and legislative initiatives from a technical standpoint including updating the State Fire Prevention Code on a regular basis

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Five years of professional experience in fire protection engineering work.
