Main Purpose of Job

A Work Adjustment Associate I is the entry level of work providing work placement, work training and work adjustment services to mentally ill patients or developmentally disabled clients within a pre-vocational development program at a residential or inpatient facility or community based program. Positions in this classification do not have supervisory responsibility but may provide advice and guidance to direct care staff, students and volunteers assigned to the program. Employees receive close supervision from a Work Adjustment Coordinator, Instructor or other designated personnel. Employees may be required to work weekends and holidays and may be subject to call-in and overtime. Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and spread of disease. Employees may be required to physically restrain patients/clients displaying violent and aggressive behavior. The work may require the lifting and positioning of non-ambulatory patients/clients and the lifting of wheelchairs and other heavy equipment. The work may require the operation of industrial machinery. The work may require long periods of standing, walking, bending and reaching.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Completion of 60 credits from an accredited college or university with at least 15 credits in health services, human services, education or the behavioral sciences.

Experience:  None.

NOTE:

Applicants may substitute two years of experience providing work placement, work training and work adjustment services to mentally ill patients or developmentally disabled clients in a pre-vocational development program for the required college credits.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2.  Employees in some positions may be required to operate vehicles which require a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. The appropriate motor vehicle operator’s license will be required.

3.  Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in and, therefore, may be required to provide the facility with a phone number where they can be reached.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
