Introduction

The Maryland DHMH Laboratories Administration now occupies a new five story laboratory facility incorporating design strategies to achieve the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Design) Silver Rating which is equipped with innovative, and cutting-edge tools - to expand scientific testing capabilities to adapt to emerging threats; to enhance preparedness efforts in response to disease outbreaks and environmental hazards; and to pursue teaching partnerships within the local community.  The Public Health Laboratory property is ideally situated in the heart of the scientific technology park at Johns Hopkins located adjacent to Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Easily accessible by MTA transit system and metro, just minutes away from downtown Baltimore and the Inner Harbor waterfront community.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

This position provides a doctoral laboratory scientist who plans, develops, and supervises scientific programs, monitors and updates operational procedures and lab services, oversees administration, and supervises personnel matters in the Division of Microbiology and may direct one or more regional laboratories of the Laboratories Administration. Assist the Administration Director and Department as a consultant in public health microbiology, parasitology, and mycology by rendering assistance to physicians, hospital staff, hospital and commercial laboratories, other organizations, and representatives of other local, State, and federal public health agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a doctoral degree from an accredited academic  institution in microbiology. molecular biology or realted life science discipline and have at least 4 years of experience supervising a CLIA complaint clinical microbiology laboratory. Candidates should have experience working in a biosafety 3 laboratory, and have medical clearance to wear N95/PAPR respirator. Candidates must be able to qualify for the security clearance background checks required to join the CDC Laboratory Response Network and eventually the CDC Select Agent Program.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who can qualify under the federal regulations (42 CFR § 493.1443) to function as an off-site clinical laboratory director for one of the DHMH regional laboratories performing high complexity testing.
