Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

To provide American Sign Language (ASL) service (as a primary language, not as a second language) to services who need support developing ASL in the early childhood, elementary, and middle school departments; To complete assessments on students' ASL skills in order to support classroom instruction and the IEP team in writing and implementing an educational document that will meet the students' individual needs; To provide coaching and consultation to classroom teachers in implementing ASL programming in all classrooms.

POSITION DUTIES

Administer language assessments to students, ages 2-15, and provide written summary reports; Provide ASL services, including language development support, for students who are not yet achieving targeted language benchmarks; Support teachers in the implementation of ASL Standards in all classrooms as a part of daily classroom instruction and school-wide programming and ensure that the ASL Standards are aligned with Maryland College and Career Ready Standards; Consult & Co-teach with teachers in utilizing ASL as a primary language of instruction to students of all abilities and learning needs; Serve as an IEP team member, determine present levels of performance and establish goals/objectives specifically addressed to student needs; Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports on student services and progress; Provide leadership and expertise in the area of ASL service and collaborate with ASL teacher in implementing ASL instruction; Support school-wide digital/media programming in the area of ASL development and instruction including but not limited to digital cameras, iPads and tablets, & videotaping and video editing softwares; Coordinate and implement school-wide events relevant to ASL/Deaf Culture and Deaf History; Participate in team and community meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree required

Maryland State Department of Education certification as ASL teacher or the ability to obtain such certification in the approved amount of time.

Experience: Fluency in ASL and written English; knowledge of the Deaf Community and the ability to teach or work with students of different educational backgrounds and additional disabilities is required.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Master's Degree in ASL Education or equivalent; experience as a classroom teacher or ASL as a primary language (L1) teacher.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568.)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
