Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the Laboratory Scientist Surveyor I is to assess and evaluate of the quality of Sterile Compounding establishments permitted by the Board and the product it produces to ensure that patients receive drug products compounded in accordance with State and federal laws and regulations and USP 797 guidelines.  This position interprets environmental viable airborne particle testing and non-viable environmental testing, deviations from fingertip touch testing and media fill testing, and other tests related to patient/product safety. In this position, the employee will review documentation including test reports related to pyrogen and pathogen toxicity, efficacy, and potency. This position will also review applications and documentation such as inspection reports, Form FDA 483, FDA Warning Letters, and correspondences to ensure that a facility is operating in compliance. This position Monitors Adverse Event reporting, perform investigations for facilities that fall out of compliance with the standards of Pharmacy practice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.

Experience:

1. Two years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
