Main Purpose of Job

The maintenance mechanic position at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum is located in St. Leonard, Calvert County, Maryland. The main responsibilities of this position include grounds maintenance, building maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and custodial duties. The maintenance mechanic will be assigned to assist with inspecting, maintaining, and making minor repairs to electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems, as well as repairing drywall, siding, and other carpentry tasks such as painting and staining.

In addition, the maintenance mechanic will operate tractors, mowers, hand, and power tools associated with landscape and grounds upkeep. Other duties may include custodial services to promote a healthy environment for workers and visitors as well as preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Occasionally, work will require lifting and moving heavy objects, up to 50 lbs. At certain times, the maintenance mechanic may assist JPPM staff in monitoring and overseeing contractors. The maintenance mechanic will also assist JPPM staff with meetings, fundraisers, and large public events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience:

Four years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades of which three years shall have been in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steam fitting, refrigeration or air conditioning.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.

2. A degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field may be substituted for up to three years of the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A High School diploma or GED.

At least 2 years of experience in one or more of the following: Landscape maintenance and carpentry. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
