Main Purpose of Job

A Painter is the full performance level of interior and exterior painting work in State facilities, hospitals and institutions. Employees receive general supervision from a Maintenance Supervisor or other designated higher-level maintenance staff. Employees may be required to work in elevated areas and to lift heavy objects.

POSITION DUTIES

The DJS Painter repairs interior and exterior surfaces to be painted with caulk, plaster, spackling compound and putty. The incumbent will be responsible for applying all types of paints and special coatings including oil based and latex primers, waterproofing, sealers, finishing coats and other related coating material to building surfaces. The DJS Painter duties includes maintaining records and inventory of supplies and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience in painting work.

Notes: 

1. Additional painting experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required education.

 2. A degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a concentration in painting may be substituted for up to three years of the required painting experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Painters, Construction and Maintenance classifications or Painters, Construction and Maintenance specialty codes in the Painting field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of painting experience in a commercial environment.

This recruitment is limited to employees of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services only.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
