Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS). The resulting eligible list will be used to fill current and future recruitments for  the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS) Central Region. Applicants certified to this list will remain eligible for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to perform the technical and general duties of a Computer Operator II at the Public Safety Data Center. This involves operating and maintaining IBM computers in a main frame environment. Operate and maintain computers associated peripheral equipment. Assist on-line users, vendors and technical support with software and hardware problems. Maintain a busy help desk which supports all communication lines and equipment assigned to National Law Enforcement Agencies, Motor Vehicle Administration, Correctional Institutions, Parole & Probation Facilities and District Courts. The duties and responsibilities of this position require that the incumbent be identified as an EMERGENCY ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating computers by entering commands through the main console
  • Illustrate knowledge of on-line systems as well as their various components
  • Record all system related problems
  • Resolve user issues
  • Process batch work

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems.

Notes:

1. Experience operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing or maintaining information may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Fifteen credit hours in computer operation at an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Computer System Operations classifications or Computer System Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

One year experience of working in a customer service (help desk ) environment.

One year experience of working on a IBM Mainframe or equivalent System such as a  IBM, AS400, 370,  3090, Z890 series mainframe system.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
