Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to function as a Lead Public Health Laboratory Scientist to subordinate Public Health Laboratory Scientist(s) in the Molecular Diagnostics/Bioterrorism Unit of the Division of Molecular Biology. This position assigns duties and reviews work of other scientists. This position performs molecular biology based assays, LRN assays, and some traditional virology assays for detection of potential bioterrorism agents and other infectious bacterial/viral agents on clinical specimens and animal/environmental samples. This position interprets and reports the results of testing to Epidemiologists/submitters. This work is performed as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable/infectious diseases in conjunction with CDC Federal Homeland Security Grant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or three years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Note:

1. Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in the biological sciences with a minimum of one course in molecular biology and one course in biochemistryA copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) MUST accompany your application; cannot award credit without proper documentation.  Please attach at time of application.
  • Candidates must possess a minimum of two years of experience performing molecular biology based testing in a Biosafety Level 2 and/or Biosafety level 3 laboratory.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear N95 and/or PAPR respiratory devise as required to perform testing in the BSL-3 laboratory.
  • Candidate must be able to receive any vaccinations required to perform BT testing assays (i.e. smallpox); and, must be able to obtain federal clearances as part of the Tier 1 Biological Select Agent & Toxin Program.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant should have experience handling potentially infectious pathogens, familiarity with biosafety risk assessment, and a sound knowledge of the principles of molecular biology based assay.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
