Main Purpose of Job
The Department of Budget and Management is recruiting for a Payroll Specialist that will assist with the day-to-day operations of the payroll unit within the Personnel Services Division. The Payroll unit is responsible for processing time and gross payroll for all State Personnel Management System (SPMS)employees(approximately 52,000)and rendering customer service to internal and external stakeholders for the State of Maryland.
This position requires strong attention to detail and professional customer service skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university.
Experience: Two years of experience in administrative or professional work.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute experience as defined above at the rate of one year experience for 30 credit hours of education for up to 60 credit hours of the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university for the required education and experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field.
Experience in Excel – Ability to create spreadsheets, graphs and formulas.
Experience performing payroll duties in a corporate or government setting.
Experience interpreting and applying COMAR and the Annotated Code of Maryland to payroll matters.
