Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden - Annapolis, MD (Anne Arundel County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for one (1) seasonal contractual Garden Horticulturist position at the Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden in Annapolis, Maryland.

 

A Garden Horticulturist is a 10 month position running the daily horticultural aspects of a public garden/arboretum.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions.  The selected applicant must have a valid driver’s license and be able to perform manual labor.  Duties may vary and generally include, but not limited to:

  • Supervise the seasonal gardener staff
  • Garden Design and plant selection
  • Perform pruning, edging, fertilizing, mulching, planting and irrigation
  • Monitoring IPM (Integrated Pest Management) throughout the garden
  • Running of a gift shop – inventory purchasing, merchandising and staffing 
  • Event setup and programming
  • Assisting visitors with gardening questions

Education: None.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
