Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife & Heritage Service in Annapolis, Maryland is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Contractual (Natural Resources Technician II). This 22-week position involves collecting biological data on rare butterflies on private lands, wildlife management areas and other protected lands in western Maryland (Garrett and Allegany Counties) and occasionally in the northern Piedmont (Harford, Baltimore and Carroll Counties) as part of a regional, multi-state federal grant. A major function of the position entails working outdoors in wetland habitats, sometimes in remote locations for long hours at a time, in varying weather conditions. The employee will identify and collect data on rare butterflies in the wetlands, assist in all aspects of wetland habitat enhancement projects, complete species data forms, and database and map all occurrence records. The employee will also work with volunteers assisting with the project.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: One year of field experience conducting outdoor field work in ecology, botany, zoology, entomology, wildlife management, natural resources management, or a related field; or thirty (30) additional credit hours from an accredited college or university (or some combination of the two that equals one year) required. 

Notes: 

Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

Education or experience with butterfly survey and identification is strongly preferred but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Selected applicants will be required to operate an automobile or other motor vehicle and must possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.  APPLICANTS MUST BE ABLE TO USE THEIR OWN VEHICLE FOR TRANSPORTATION TO FIELD SITES IN THE EVENT THAT A STATE VEHICLE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR USE.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
