Potomac-Garrett State Forest - Oakland, MD (Garrett County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for two (2) Seasonal Contractual Summer Forestry Worker positions. Both positions will be located at Potomac-Garrett State Forest, Garrett County, Maryland. The selected candidates will collect forest inventory data, timber marking, boundary marking, herbicide application to control non-native invasives, etc. The incumbents should be proficiently skilled with a multitude of technical forestry equipment including GPS, compass, clinometer, range finders, 10 and 20 BAF prisms, increment corers, as well as able to accurately read and interpret topographic maps. The selected candidates will work in inclement weather and traverse rugged terrain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Completion of 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university, including dendrology or tree identification or herbaceous plant identification; 15 credits which should be in environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, natural resource management, or a natural resource management related field of study.    

Experience:  None.  

Note:  

Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture or natural resource management, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
