LOCATION OF POSITION

Maryland Department of Agriculture, Plant Protection & Weed Management Program, Annapolis, Maryland.

Main Purpose of Job

To assist in survey and detection activities for Phytophthera ramorum and various exotic insect pests between May and October 2017.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties may involve laboratory and/or field work, to include the following:

  • Collection of disease samples in the field.
  • Preparation of sample for testing (tear/cut/weigh and grind).
  • Operation of laboratory equipment such as pH meter, balance, microscope, electrophoresis, Bunsen burner, centrifuge and autoclave.
  • Enter data, handle correspondence and telephone calls.
  • Collection of insect pests from trap locations throughout Maryland.
  • Maintenance and upkeep on traps as required.
  • Accurate data collection.
  • Use of GPS units and personal computers.

 Work will involve interactions with the public, exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, pesticides, high humidity and temperature in the field.  Employees may be required to wear protective equipment.  Training will be provided on field survey and laboratory work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and possess a driver's license valid in Maryland with no more than 5 points on driving record.

High School Diploma or GED required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

College level biology with molecular biology coursework preferred. (Please submit your transcript.)

Previous experience with biological field work preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

A Driver's license valid in Maryland is required (with no more than 5 points on driving record.)

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
