Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Fish & Wildlife Health Program, is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Technician.

The main purpose of this position is: 1) to conduct vector-borne disease surveillance and sampling, 2) to enter data, 3) to summarize trends, 4) to write a tech report, 5) to assist biologists with fieldwork as appropriate, and 6) to execute administrative duties as assigned and help to coordinate and conduct fieldwork, 7) to maintain a clean and bio-secure field sites and lab spaces and re-stock sampling kits.

The position relates to the mission of DNR by contributing to sustainable populations of living resources and habitat within the state of Maryland through the investigation of fish and wildlife population conservation, including threatened and endangered species, and monitoring for health and disease.

Early morning sampling and long response days are to be expected. High heat and often unpleasant conditions - handling animal waste, animal carcasses are to be expected.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Completion of at least two years of college credits from an accredited college or university in biology, animal sciences, veterinary sciences, or a natural resources management related field of study. Completed coursework must have included wildlife diseases and zoonotic diseases and disease control.

Experience: None.                    

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following:

1. At least one year of experience handling birds and other animals.

2. Experience with swab sampling and other biological sampling of animals to include sampling for Avian Influenza.

3. Experience entering data and maintaining databases.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. The ability to drive, and having own transportation to and from work location (Oxford, MD) is essential.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
