This is part-time work, with variable hours (approximately 200 hours total per season).  Contractual employees are paid for actual hours worked only, with no paid leave.  Mileage will be reimbursed when traveling within your assigned region.

Garrett, Allegany and Washington Counties (Heaviest inspection activities are in Washington County.)

Main Purpose of Job

Apiary Inspector - Part-time seasonal field aide to assist with activities of the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Apiary Inspection Program.

POSITION DUTIES

Conduct inspection of honey bee colonies for diseases, pests and pesticide losses; make recommendations of appropriate measures for honey bee colony management and control of bee diseases; keep records and perform office work to document inspection activities; and assist with licensing activities.

Work will involve interactions with the public; exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature and humidity and other outdoor exposures.  Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age. High School Diploma or GED required.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

This is specialized work, and a thorough understanding of diseases, honey bee colonies and beekeeping programs is required to carry out inspection activities.  A minimum of three years of successful, progressively responsible experience in a practical beekeeping program or in beekeeping inspection is required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

A driver's license valid in Maryland is required.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
