Introduction

MHT is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, MHT assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage. Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Historical Trust serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

Main Purpose of Job

This position falls within the Research and Survey unit, consistent with Maryland Department of Planning (MDP) and Maryland Historical Trust's mission of studying, evaluating, protecting and interpreting the states historic sites, structures, districts, and cultural traditions.

This unit is the core of the Office, from which all research and field data is developed, and includes the statewide architectural survey program. This position oversees the survey of standing structures throughout the state and supervises documentation efforts for inclusion in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties (MIHP).  This includes intensive review of MIHP forms, photographs, measured drawings, research designs and final written reports to ensure they meet State and Federal standards.

This position administers state and federal grant programs related to multi-disciplinary survey and evaluation activities throughout the state including selection of grants, project development, hiring, training, and supervision of consultants in the field. In addition, this position conducts in-depth field analysis and documentation of significant recourses and provides technical expertise to state agencies, local governments, federal agencies, non-profit organizations and the general public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

For those not using the experience substitution, candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in:

Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Art History, History, Historic Architecture, Folklore, American Studies or other closely related field.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least one year of professional experience in historic preservation or architectural field survey.

Knowledge of historic architecture, building analysis, and investigation/documentation methods and a demonstrated ability to conduct architectural field surveys and scholarly research are preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
