Main Purpose of Job

This position maintains traceability of standards to the National Institute of Standards and Technology and is recognized as an approved signatory within the same entity. These standards are used by Maryland Weights and Measures inspectors in their regulatory duties and by industry to adjust and calibrate commercial devices.

POSITION DUTIES

Performs initial and subsequent inspections and tests of physical standards and equipment purchased and used by the Weights and Measures program. Utilizing procedures, regulations and a knowledge of current policies, determines suitability of the items and approves them for use or rejects them.

In conjunction with appropriate instruments and using procedures approved by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), periodically assists in testing the primary physical standards of the State. Evaluates results of tests with statistical procedures and determines state of control and subsequent action required to maintain statistical control.

Maintains traceability of state standards to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Maintains individual NIST accredited technical competence as an approved signatory.

Maintains all the instruments and equipment in the custody of the metrology laboratory.

Prepares and reviews calibration certificates, reports, letters, weekly activity reports and client billings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience in specialized laboratory work developing and performing technical regulatory measurement studies.

Notes: 

1. Additional education at an accredited college or university in engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics or related fields may be substituted at the rate of sixteen (16) credit hours per year of experience for no more than two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Medical Laboratory classifications or Medical Laboratory specialty codes in the Medical Technologist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualification: Certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology as an approved signatory for Mass Metrology and Volume Measurement.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.

Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants may be given a medical examination and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the work required of the position prior to permanent appointment.

2. Applicants must successfully complete the Intermediate Laboratory Metrology Course given by the National Institute of Standards and Technology including the satisfactory completion of follow-up problems prior to permanent appointment.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
