Main Purpose of Job
This position Operates the primary poultry health diagnostic laboratory in the State and delivers full service veterinary laboratory diagnostic services to the lower Delmarva region. This region comprises one of the most dense broiler production systems in the US. As pathologist, the incumbent is the primary poultry diagnostician for the Agency and may provide all-species pathology diagnostics to regional constituents for critical cases. As the State-wide Poultry Programs Subject Matter Expert, the incumbent advises the State Veterinarian on issues of poultry health and emergency readiness and response. This position provides critical support to the Agency's mission of protecting animal and public health, promoting agriculture, ensuring consumer confidence, and protecting the environment.
Establishes laboratory operational and diagnostic procedures.
Supervises assigned laboratory staff.
Responsible for managing the laboratory budget, assigned facilities, equipment and supplies.
Provides management or oversight for regional poultry and livestock surveillance programs as assigned.
Serves as lead agency Poultry Pathology Diagnostician.
Establishes laboratory and field necropsy operational and diagnostic procedures.
Uses the Laboratory Information Management System (VADDS) to prepare case reports for poultry companies.
Education: Possession of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or a Veterinary Medical Doctor’s degree from a college or university accredited or recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Experience: Five years of post-doctoral experience in Veterinary Medicine, three years of which must have been in a Veterinary diagnostic laboratory specialty.
1. Applicants may substitute possession of a Ph.D. or D.Sc. degree in pathology or microbiology or Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or Veterinary Microbiologists for two years of the required specialized experience.
2. Applicants may substitute possession of a M.S. degree in pathology or microbiology for one year of the required specialized experience. (Total allowable substitution under notes 1 and 2 is two years).
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in veterinary preventive medicine classification or veterinary preventive medicine specialty codes in the veterinary medical science field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required and experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
At least one year of experience as a Veterinary Pathologist.
At least on year of poultry pathology experience.
