Main Purpose of Job

The Nutrition Program Trainee is the nonlicensed entry level of work providing nutrition services to clients in a public health or community setting. The Nutrition Program Trainee is responsible for learning to research, plan and implement the nutrition and breastfeeding education plans according to state policy and procedure and learns to present these plans to participants through group and individual contacts. This position also learns to provide specialized nutrition care to participants who are at a nutrition risk. This involves learning to provide diet therapy counseling prepared for individuals with the preparation of care plans and follow up. This also involves learning to train and educate the WIC paraprofessionals with agency in-services and learns to use check list to assure staff are following policy and procedures and correctly administrating paraprofessional duties. The trainee learns how to keep staff up to date on breastfeeding education/information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Community Nutrition, Dietetics, Foods and Human Nutrition, Food Systems Management or Nutrition Education.  A copy of your transcript must be attached to your application.

Experience:  None.

NOTE: 

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dietitian and Nutritionist classification or Dietitian and Nutritionist specialty codes in the Dietitian field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

The evaluation may be a rating of your application based on your education, training and experience as they relate to the requirements of the position. For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application. BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
