Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as an Epidemiologist with the Environmental Health Bureau (Bureau). The responsibilities of the position include the application of epidemiology knowledge, skills, and abilities in the implementation of Bureau services, programs, policies, and grants such as conducting data analyses, interpreting, and disseminating results of epidemiologic studies for public health action.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.

Experience:  Two years of experience in designing and conducting epidemiological studies and investigations for disease surveillance as an epidemiologist subsequent to receipt of the Master’s degree.

NOTE:

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science  classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of practical experience analyzing environmental, occupational, and/or injury data using SAS and interpreting results to produce tables/charts/maps for informing decision-making or outreach and education activities.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Proficiency in SAS and Excel spreadsheets is an important skill.  Familiarity with or coursework in ArcGIS for data visualization is preferred, but not necessarily required.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
