Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment.  The resulting list of eligible will be used to staff this position or function only.  This list will be maintained for one year.  You will need to reapply for any future recruitment for this job classification.

LOCATION OF POSITION

1100 N. Eutaw Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.  (Primarily Baltimore City, however, this position may travel throughout the State of Maryland).

Main Purpose of Job

The primary purpose of this position is to protect the lives and property of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. To enforce the laws, rules and regulations, that governs the State of Maryland. To perform daily Police and customer service operations with Integrity, Fairness and Impartiality.

POSITION DUTIES

This position patrols the building and grounds of the property; monitors the surveillance system when scheduled; writes clear and accurate reports of incidents; responds to disturbances and emergencies; administers first aid; issues warning or summonses and make arrest when necessary; monitors the parking lot; investigates accidents and criminal acts; transport suspects and/or, patients, State employees and do bank runs in the State vehicle; may have to appear in court and testify as a State witness in connection with arrest made while on or off duty; and other related assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Six months of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

Note: 

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

PLEASE INDICATE YOUR MPCTC CERTIFICATION NUMBER under the Specialized Training Section of your application. A copy of your MPCTC Certification must be provided at the time of interview.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a police officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application.

2. Applicants formerly certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission as a police officer within the past three years who are eligible for recertification at the time of appointment meet the certification requirement for this classification. The recertification criteria are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.07, available at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

3. Employees may be required to possess or obtain a special police commission inaccordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-209.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Selection standards for police officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship Must be at least 21 years of age Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history Oral interview Physical examination Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a phone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. 4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing inaccordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants must provide sufficient information on the application  to show they meet the qualifications for this recruitment.  All information concerning the qualifications, including submittal of any required documentation (diplomas, transcripts, certificates, licenses, etc.) must be submitted at the time of interview.  Failure to submit the required documentation will result in the application being disapproved.

Applications that meet the qualifications will be referred to the hiring unit for interview selection.  Units will select those candidates most closely demonstrating the qualifications for interview.  The certified list will be used by DLLR for a period of one year.    

Please Note: A writing assessment will be administered during the interview suitable for this position.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination for this recruitment will be an evaluation and rating of the information provided on your application.  Therefore, it is essential that the application is filled out completely and accurately, listing all relevant education and experience addressing the specific qualifications shown above.  Required documentation (diplomas, transcripts, certifications, licenses, etc.) must be submitted at the time of interview.  Failure to submit the documentation will result in the application being considered denied.

Successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list categorized as Best Qualified, Better Qualified or Qualified.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
