Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS). The resulting eligible list will be used to fill current and future recruitments for  the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS) Central Region. Applicants certified to this list will remain eligible for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to perform administrator functions for DPSCS databases which facilitate the exchange of timely, secure, and accurate criminal justice information between state and local government agencies and support the Department's initiative to achieve a safe environment for the citizens of Maryland. This position requires 24/7 on-call availability.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

Administer all Oracle/SQL Data Base environments, to include designing, monitoring, tuning, protecting integrity and providing backup for all Oracle and SQL Data Bases according to needs and database management system requirements.

Tasks include:

  • Perform database backups and updates, update documentation on processes, perform database maintenance, maintain database tables, update enterprise database tables, load local tables for internal applications, and migrate data for upgrades.
  • Provide backup Oracle/SQL technical support to all levels of data processing personnel concerning data base design, data base development, data base usage, security and integrity, transaction security and problem solving.
  • Perform archiving tasks for historical retrieval of data.
  • Prepare various reports for both internal and external sources.
  • Troubleshoot various problems for system users and programmers, such as problems with data, data storage, and data access, and collaborate with IT teams to resolve issues.
  • Resolve helpdesk tickets by working with internal teams and product vendors.
  • Recommend database changes concerning the structure and use of data fields.
  • Decide on database back-up policy and procedure, the frequency and manner that back-ups are performed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology related field to include course work in database management systems.

Experience: None.

Notes: 1. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate plus thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology-related field to include course work in database management systems may be substituted for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and one year of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining applications systems and programs using generally accepted computer programming languages or maintaining and modifying operating systems for computers may be substituted for the required education.

3. Experience operating computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on computer systems; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages may be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Database Administration classifications or Database Administration specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are preferred, not required:

  • One year of experience administering Oracle and SQL environments, responsible for designing, monitoring, tuning, protecting integrity and providing backup for all ITCD Oracle and SQL Data Bases.
  • One year of writing SQL queries. 
  • Certified Oracle DBA.
  • Certified SQL Server DBA.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached or will be furnished with a cell phone.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
