The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees' benefit retirement composed of 12 separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 200,000 active members and more than 150,000 retires and beneficiaries.

Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as a staff accountant under the direction of the General Ledger Manager. This includes efficient and accurate maintenance of general ledgers for cash receipts and disbursements, accounts receivables and payables, and accurate determination of asset, liability, and equity accounts and annual financial reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland State Retirement Agency has a permanent position for an Accountant Advanced within the Agency's Finance Division, located at 120 E. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System. The System is a multi-employer, public employees' defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 200,00active members and more than 150,00 retirees and beneficiaries.

This position functions as a staff accountant under the direction of the Accountant Supervisor II. The position requires efficient and accurate maintenance of general ledgers for cash receipts and disbursements, accounts receivables and payables, and accurate determination of asset, liability, and equity accounts and annual financial reporting requirements and disclosures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and preparation of required periodic financial statements, reports and analysis. involving multiple complex accounting systems to perform accurate and timely pension accounting,  This position is responsible for: Monthly and Year-End G/L Closing, Cashflow Reconciliations, Preparation of Federal and State Tax Remittances, and monitoring and reconciling bank transactional activity via web based banking system. Candidates must possess proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office products), strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent organization and time management  skills, and enjoy working as a team player in a fast paced, deadline sensitive environment.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing. Please upload a copy of your transcript or list your degree and relevant coursework on the employment application.

Experience: Three years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with thirty credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing for the required education.

2. Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974 will be considered to have met the educational requirement referenced above.

3. Possession of a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant or a master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

4. Applicants may substitute one year of professional auditing experience for one year of the required experience.

5.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Accounting Officer classification or Financial Management specialty codes in the Accounting field of work on a year for year basis for the required experience and education.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess 1 year or more experience in each of the following areas:

Preparation of financial statements

Experience performing Month End Close

Experience performing Year End Close

Account reconciliation and analyses

Familiarity with Traverse (or similar multi-ledger and/or multi-module accounting system)

Experience accounting for and reconciling high-volume banking transactions such as ACH's, EFT;s Reclamations, etc..

Experience generating and analyzing standard banking transactions reports

Possession of a CPA, a plus
