Introduction
The Office of the Attorney General, Department of Health, Health Occupations Prosecution and Litigation Division (“HOPL”) is seeking applicants for a Contractual Paralegal.
GRADE
12
Main Purpose of Job
The position will provide administrative and legal support to Assistant Attorneys General.
POSITION DUTIES
Typing and reviewing legal documents, pleadings, memoranda, and correspondence;
Drafting basic pleadings; conducting legal and investigative research;
Preparing exhibits; communicating with staff, other agencies, and the general public;
Maintaining office resources;
Monitoring trial calendars; Answering telephones;
Any additional duties related to working in a high volume law office.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduated from an accredited high school, or possess a high school equivalency certificate.
Minimum of three years experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney. (Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university or law school may be substituted for the required experience).
Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or comparable word processing skills.
Strong organizational and writing skills.
Detailed-oriented
Ability to work at consistently high pace
Knowledge of civil and criminal litigation procedures preferred.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
