Main Purpose of Job

The Pharmacist Compliance Officer is responsible for supervising the nine member Compliance Unit at the Maryland Board of Pharmacy. The Unit consists of two components; compliance and inspections. The Compliance component is responsible for receiving and investigating complaints about pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacies, and wholesale distributors; investigating those complaints and reporting findings to the Board based on Maryland laws and regulations and standards of care; executing and tracking Board actions; and monitoring the compliance of those pharmacists, pharmacies, pharmacy technicians and wholesale distributors with Board actions. The Inspections component is required to annually inspect pharmacies and biennially inspect wholesale distributors to assess compliance with Maryland laws and regulations, inspect establishments in response to complaints related to pharmacy and wholesale distributor operations; prepare inspection reports and follow-up on compliance with Board actions.

The Pharmacist Compliance Officer supervises the Compliance Unit Supervisor. This position provides leadership in the development and implementation of protocols and guidance regarding inspection and compliance activities. Reports the monthly and annual statistics regarding inspections and Board sanctions.

Pharmacy practice is a dynamic profession, therefore, the Pharmacist Compliance Officer provides recommendations for updating and revising pharmacy statutes, regulations and policy in order to keep pace with changes impacting the profession. In this role the position represents the Board staff in matters by serving on legislatively appointed workgroups, or task forces comprised of other health professional organizations, and DHMH officials.

The Pharmacist Compliance Officer must have the ability to assess pharmacy practice and care delivered to patients by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians which includes; define and assess therapeutic problems, identify drug interactions, and other appropriate practice roles to evaluate the work of pharmacists who are performing these functions.

The Pharmacist Compliance Officer must have a thorough understanding of all pharmacy laws and regulations and be able to apply this knowledge to monitor standards of care in a wide variety of practice settings. Written and verbal questions pertaining to the laws and regulations governing pharmacy practice are received daily with accurate, timely responses required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university and six (6) years of health or human services professional experience, including three (3) years at a supervisory or management level.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of sterile compounding laws and regulations and Maryland Pharmacist license preferred.
