Main Purpose of Job

The Chief of the Office of Food Protection (OFP) develops, implements, directs, coordinates, and evaluates State food and milk protection ensuring application of best practices and quality services. This position leads policy and program operations across OFP in collaboration with PHPA and in partnerships with federal, state and local agencies. This position provides subject matter knowledge of foods, food ingredients, food processing and handling, foodborne illnesses, food related health issues, and food analysis techniques. This position administers OFP food regulations including enforcement and compliance. Key elements of the position are:

  • Familiarity with the food industry infrastructure and business processes and practice
  • Familiarity and experience with the food regulatory structure
  • Management of food regulatory programs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor's degree and 6 years of professional experience in health or human services (2 years of experience may be substituted with completed advanced degree(s)).  Candidate must also have five years of leadership and management experience and four years of supervisory experience.  Candidate must also possess three years of experience with food regulatory programs, food science, food manufacturing, or food safety (1 year may be substituted with environmental health specialist licensing/certification). 

Skills and experience in budgeting, project and grants management, communication and customer service.  Experience in implementation of information management solutions.  Must have strong organizational and planning skills and be able to multi-task.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with information technology for food permits and licensing, inspections, and web services.

Skills in strategic planning, quality improvement, and systems thinking.
