Main Purpose of Job

Teaching basic entrance level and instructor level firearms programs to police and correctional personnel. Selected candidate will also serve as a principal instructor for these schools and will facilitate an adult learning environment along with the creation of lesson plans to include research of current teaching taxonomy to meet need assessments for future programs.

POSITION DUTIES

The selected candidate will be teaching basic entrance level weapon classes, firearms instructor schools, conversion schools, special weapons schools and other programs as requested.  The selected candidate will serve as a contact for individual schools, being responsible for administrative matters and the coordination of said programs. The selected candidate will coordinate training programs with other program managers within the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions and other Law Enforcement agencies. The selected candidate will develop course content, programs and curriculum that meet the training objectives of the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions. The selected candidate will be required to evaluate student’s needs, in an effort to determine if the student requires additional/remedial training.  The selected candidate may be asked to participate in research programs and projects in the effort to keep all training programs current and viable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Three years experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
 
2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience. 

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the selective qualification(s) to be considered. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • 10 years of experience in the criminal justice field. 
  • Must be certified by the Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission as a Firearms Instructor for a minimum of 5 years.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.

  • Experience in managing Firearms training programs for both police and correctional agencies.
  • Experience in armorer work for pistol, shotgun and rifle.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
