Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the Administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees' defined benefit retirement system, covering approximately 193,000 active members and more than 150,000 retirees and beneficiaries.

The information Systems Division hosts a complex data center with internal and internet-facing applications supporting our operations and members.  This is a perfect environment for an intern in the Computer Science/ Information Technology majors to immerse themselves in, make valuable contributions to, and gain valuable experience from, prior to entering the workforce.

Main Purpose of Job

Be part of a Systems Development team that delivers technology solutions to improve everyday business operations. Depending on the stages of active projects, you'll work with the Director, Supervisor and Senior Developers on some or many of the following tasks/areas.

 

POSITION DUTIES

  • Help gather and document 'as-is' scenarios and desired 'to-be' conditions from business units.
  • Participate in software design sessions and document designs and plans.
  • Create and maintain requirements documents.
  • Help devise, coordinate and participate in software testing, summarizing results.
  • Assist with issue/bug tracking and resolution processes, change control management.
  • Give input on improvements to applications and processes.
  • Assist in project management and reporting, task tracking.
  • Coordinate implementation and training, write end user documentation.
  • Create and maintain user support mechanisms.
  • Take notes and prepare meeting summaries.
  • Various programming assignments.
  • Research COTS (Commercial, Off-the-Shelf) software products.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Education:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (preferred), MIS, or Information Technology
  • Must be a Junior or Senior
  • Must have completed coursework covering object oriented programming concepts and languages
  • Cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Must successfully pass a background check. 

Skill, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and team work skills
  • Good analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills to evaluate business processes and problems and apply the skills to help identify appropriate solutions
  • Good time management and organization skills; able to handle multiple assignments at one time
  • Must be eager to learn and self-motivated
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and outlook
  • Knowledge or programming concepts, relational databases concepts, and how web applications work.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualification:

Experience programming using the Microsoft stack (Visual Studio, C#.Net, ASP.NET, MS SQL Server, IIS)

Experience creating and/or maintaining web-based applications for work or fun.

Applicants may be evaluated based on education, training and experience in relation to the requirements and qualifications listed for the position.  You must possess the minimum qualifications in order to be selected for a State job. Successful candidates will be placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.

This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
