Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the contractual position of Public Relations Specialist within the Division of Tourism, Film, and the Arts.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary responsibility of this position is to execute a media relations program to promote Maryland as a world-class travel destination to the regional and local trade and lifestyle media. Candidates must be able to work with regional and local travel journalists to secure third-party editorial coverage of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

The position duties include: creating lasting connections to local and regional media outlets as measured through activities such hosting travel media, media blitzes plus M3 and advertising equivalency; coordinating the public relations efforts to support activities of the Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts; writing, editing and generating copy, fact sheets, pitches that will enable Maryland to continue to inspire consumers to select Maryland as a travel destination. The selected employee will interact with local and regional journalists; media influencers, travel writers and national press network; the Maryland Tourism Industry, the Maryland Association of Destination Marketing Organizations to determine the best strategy and messaging to increase visitor spending by showcasing the state as a must-see destination.

The selected candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills and maintain effective working relationships; excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority projects; well organized. Some statewide travel is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Marketing, or a related field and

Experience:  Four years of professional marketing experience with direct experience in public relations, media coordination, and published communications, publicity or promotional work or related field. 

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving Public Relations staff work, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations related to public relations, marketing, or related field or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with tourism background. 

Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, Google Mail and/or other relevant software.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
