Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement and Pension System is charged with the fiduciary responsibility for properly administering the retirement and pension allowances of more than 147,000 retirees and beneficiaries as well as the future benefits for more than 246,000 active and former members.  These groups include state government employees, teachers, law enforcement personnel, legislators, judges and local government employees and fire fighters whose employers have elected to participate in the system.  

The Investment Division of the Maryland State Retirement Agency seeks bright, highly motivated individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity and strong problem solving skills, excellent analytical skills and attention to detail with proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Office, and Power Point to join its Investment Analyst Part-time Internship Program. 

These positions include one part-time internship position during the school semester, and two full-time summer internship positions. When applying for these internship opportunities, please indicate for which position you are applying.  

The Investment Division is responsible for investing the assets of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System, totaling about $49 billion as of June 30, 2017. The intern(s) will work in one or more of the areas of the division, which could include Public Equity, Fixed Income, Real Estate, Private Equity, and/or Absolute Return.

POSITION DUTIES

The primary responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following:

Asset class research and data analysis;         

Work with Investment Staff on new and existing projects to enhance the organization's knowledgebase in assigned asset classes;        

Participate in meetings with the System's external investment managers;         

Perform data analysis, compile information, and develop presentations as requested.         

Assist with some administrative tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

For both Internship positions:  

Junior or Senior status in college with a 3.50 or higher GPA and be a Finance, Business or STEM major.(Must submit copy of transcript with application)

For the Summer Internship position only:

Same as above for Summer Internship, however any major will be considered with the minimum of 18 credit hours in STEM or related subjects. However, must still have a 3.50 or higher GPA.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Finance, Economics, Investments, Accounting or STEM majors preferred

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants may be evaluated based on education, training and experience in relation to the requirements and qualifications listed for the position.  You must possess the minimum qualifications in order to be selected for this recruitment.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.  Report all related education, experience, dates and hours of work. 

Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours per week.  All information concerning your qualifications must be included on your application and submitted by the closing date. 

We will not consider incomplete applications. Successful candidates will be placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year. Applicants must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform Act to be hired.  Selected candidate must successfully pass a background check.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
