The main purpose of this position is to act as a scientist in the Division of Molecular Biology's Molecular Epidemiology/Core Sequencing Program conducting specialized molecular biology based test procedures on select bacterial and viral pathogens submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory for detection of infectious disease agents. These duties will be performed as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable/infectious diseases and/or in support of disease surveillance initiatives in conjunction with federally funded FDA Genome Trakr program.

Education:    Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.  A copy of your transcript must be attached to the application.

Experience:  None.

NOTE: 

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

At least one course in molecular biology/cell biology and one course in biochemistry.

The successful candidate should have knowledge of molecular biology based assays, particularly real-time PCR, and experience handling infectious agents.

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
