Main Purpose of Job

This position is the advanced level of work providing clinical services in psychiatry to patients who are mentally ill, chronically ill or developmentally disabled or are in need of medical and preventive treatment. It directs the Unit's programming toward delivery of psychiatric inpatient services, ie evaluation, treatment, discharge and aftercare planning. This position requires certification by the American Medical Association Specialty Board in the specialty of Psychiatry. The candidate may also have a subspecialty in Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry or Geriatric Psychiatry. The Physician Clinical Specialist receives general supervision from a higher level physician or an administrative official, may supervise health care support staff and is Emergency Essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Possession of a degree in medicine from an accredited college or university. 

Experience:  As required for certification in an area of medical specialization by an American Medical Association Specialty Board.

NOTE: 

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Medical Corpsman and Physicians classifications or Nursing or Physician and Medical Services and Special Corpsman Officer specialty codes in the medicine field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires certification by the American Medical Association Specialty Board in the specialty of Psychiatry. The candidate may also have a subspecialty in Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry or Geriatric Psychiatry.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Applicants must be certified by an American Medical Association Specialty Board in an area of medical specialization.  A copy of your certification by the American Medical Association Specialty Board in the specialty of Psychiatry or subspecialty in Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry or Geriatric Psychiatry must be attached to the application.

2.  Applicants must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law.  A copy of your current license must be attached to the application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
