MPT Managing Director, Major and Planned Giving

Introduction

Maryland Public Television (MPT) is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to lead, manage and enhance its current major and planned giving program.

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is primarily responsible for representing MPT to constituencies with proven record or potential for donating major gifts/contributions to the MPT Foundation. It identifies, cultivates and solicits individuals, foundations, and government agencies who may have an interest in supporting MPT's priorities and programs. This position is also involved in seeking planned/estate and deferred gifts.

Note: This position will supervise a Director of Major and Planned Giving, Director of Foundation Gifts, a Campaign Counsel, and  Major and Planned Giving Coordinator. Upon the selection of this position, the Managing Director will be responsible for recruiting and hiring a Major Gifts Officer.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Identify prospects through research, records, referrals, etc. as appropriate.
  • Oversee a team that maintains an effective recordkeeping system and an efficient follow-up procedure to assure all initial contacts receive appropriate attention. 
  • Carefully cultivate prospects through personal contact. 
  • Assist donors in developing plans for use of their gifts through gift agreements, letters of intent or similar means. 
  • Maintain an ongoing and active relationship with donors.
  • Work closely with development and senior staff, foundation board members and commissioners in developing a strategy and contacts for donors and prospects.
  • Initiate/oversee regular informational mailings to both donors and prime prospects among the various constituencies of the non-profit broadcaster. 
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in the area of major gifts, estate planning and charitable donations.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, local and national conferences.
  • Maintain an understanding of tax laws and other aspects of philanthropy. 
  • Review all printed material that relates to major giving. 
  • The ability to motivate, foster, lead and direct a team. Develop and encourage cooperation and respect among team members. 
  • The ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with multiple departments at MPT.
  • The ability to effectively communicate information and ideas to others both verbally and in writing in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Serves as a liaison to the MPT Foundation Board.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications and/or Business or in a related field.

Experience: Qualified candidates must possess at least five years experience in major donor cultivation and/or running a comprehensive campaign and meeting financial goals for a major donor program.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • PBS experience
  • Experience with Non-Profit Organizations
  • Masters Degree in Non-Profit Administration
  • Demonstrated success with engaging regional philanthropic and business community leaders in fundraising activities
  • The ability to implement effective donor acquisition and recognition programs using philanthropy best practices
  • Proven experience working with fundraising board members to identify and acquire new major donors
  • Working knowledge and understanding of tax laws and other aspects of philanthropy
