Purpose

The Machinist I is responsible for the machining, fabricating and repair of equipment, tools and fixtures for the distribution section of Milwaukee Water Works.

Essential Functions

  • Operate machining equipment and tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders, welding equipment, pneumatic tools and compressors to manufacture and repair parts for specialized, custom and obsolete tools, valves and various other equipment and supplies in order to maintain the water distribution system.
  • Analyze required materials and parts needed to be secured to conduct repairs of valve stems, operating nuts, wrenches, manhole frames and covers, blow-offs, and air vents to maintain the system.
  • Provide direction to repair crews for proper disassembly and assembly of water distribution valves, blow-off, and air vents during the course of repairs.
  • Conduct field repairs by replacing operating nut and/or stems onsite.
  • Enter excavations and/or manholes to extract existing parts and install replacement parts.
  • Conduct proper confined space safety permits and procedures wearing safety harness and ensure all safety procedures are in place.
  • Repair and maintain pumps, compressors, trailers, backhoes, small engines, gate and service wrenches and other related equipment.
  • Track and ensure maintenance schedules are followed according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain equipment and parts inventory.
  • Ensure machine shop is organized and kept in an efficient, productive state.
  • Safely install and use riggings, harness and chains to operate overhead cranes and hoists.
  • Ensure loads are properly rigged to their weight and movement.
  • Ensure lifting devices are in good condition and annually inspected.
  • Maintain inspection records to ensure lifting devices are in good condition.

Conditions of Employment

  • Water Distribution Section employees are considered “essential” and must report to work as scheduled no matter the weather conditions or emergency event.
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions (including inclement weather) for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to enter confined spaces and wear confined space safety equipment.
  • Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs frequently and 100lbs occasionally.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Three years of shop experience as a journey-level machinist or journey-level machine repair specialist performing related duties.
  2. City of Milwaukee Forklift Operator Certification within six months of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Valid state of Wisconsin driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment to operate city-owned vehicles.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of machinist tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, sheet metal benders, rollers, breaks, press break and shears, pipe benders and hydraulic benders, and punch press, including their design, use, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of machining methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of welding practices such as gas metal arc welding, metal inert gas welding, tungsten inert gas welding and welding safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of metal types and properties.
  • Ability to utilize welding tools such as torch tips, filler rods, flux, hoses and valve gas cylinders.
  • Ability to operate hoists, hand power tools, slings, grinders, cutting torch and other hand tools related to job needs.
  • Ability to read and interpret charts, tables, blueprints, designs, construction plans, as-builts and plat pages.
  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what type of maintenance is needed.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (Pay Range 7IN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $48,358 annually, and the non-resident starting salary is $47,172.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.  

INITIAL FILING DATE - The examination will be held as soon as practical after October 4, 2017.
